First stop in the morning, the Norbulingka - the Dalai Lama's summer palace and the place from which he escaped in 1959. It is an oasis of tranquillity.
Later in the morning, to Drepung Monastery on the north west edge of Lhasa. This was once home to 10,000 monks but now only a few hundred are allowed to live there. As recently as 3 years ago one of the high lamas was punished for dissent by being starved to death in his own quarters.
In the afternoon, into the Potala itself. A magnificent place but now reduced to a museum with many more police and soldiers than monks.
In the evening, to 'The Mad Yak' restaurant where a highlight of the buffet was the fried sheep's lung. I went back for more!
