Sun. 15th April. To EVEREST BASE-CAMP. 5,100 m.

We left Tingri before dawn and had an hour's delay as the equipment truck was rescued from it's dive into an ice covered stream.

We arrived at Rongbuk Monastery to the usual spectacular view of the North Face of Everest.

You can watch this view all day as it is quickly and constantly changing with the light and the cloud.

Sadly, and as a result of the chinese attitude to the Tibetans, the monastery was a shadow of what I'd seen 4 years previously. It was desperately quiet. I saw no monks. All the prayer flags had been removed and replaced with a single chinese red flag. Very sad to see!

We arrived at base camp to our scattered tents but a great welcome from the summit team who'd been there for a week already.

The mess tent was a welcoming warm place with plenty of food and drink,

Here 3 of the Swedish team are trying their oxygen masks for the first time.
