In the morning we crossed the so-called 'Friendship Bridge'.
Passports checked many times by unsmiling Chinese border guards. All our bags x-rayed twice and searched thoroughly. My Lonely Planet guide to Tibet was confiscated as it 'is forbidden'. Any mention of the Dalai Lama is not allowed!
After a few hours waiting in the miserable town of Zhangmu on the Tibetans side of the border we drove for about 3 hours to Nyalam. Here the local girls were keen to pose - I think they'd done this before.
That evening the first of our many identical Chinese meals - rice and 4 types of vegetable broth - thin, watery and not very nutritious.
